Why Your Supplier's Spec Sheet Says 1,000 kg and Your Site Disagrees

2026-09-30 · 2 min de leitura

A specification sheet that gives one impressive number for every parameter is written to be sold, not to be used. Real ratings depend on conditions, and a supplier who will not say so is telling you something about how the rest of the conversation will go.

Why a spec sheet rating and the real site payload are not the same number

Load rating is conditional

The 1,000 kg figure on a mini dumper normally assumes a hard, level surface and excludes the operator. Move the same machine onto wet clay, or onto a 10% ramp, and the safe working load drops — commonly by 15–25%, more on soft ground. A rating quoted as a range, or quoted alongside the conditions it assumes, is more useful than a larger number quoted alone.

Steel thickness is a range for a reason

Hoppers are made in 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0 mm plate. If you are told simply "thick steel", ask for the millimetre figure. If the sheet quotes the thickest available plate as though it were standard, ask what the base price includes.

Motor and controller are separate components

A 1,500 W motor paired with an under-rated controller will not deliver 1,500 W continuously. Ask about the controller as well as the motor, and whether the motor is brushed or brushless — the latter matters more for service life than the peak wattage figure.

Battery claims

Compare watt-hours, not claimed hours. Multiply volts by amp-hours: 48 V × 20 Ah is 960 Wh, or roughly 1 kWh. That is the honest basis for estimating working range, and it makes inflated claims obvious at a glance.

Dimensions, including the ones that catch people out

Overall length, width and height matter, but so do the turning circle, the ground clearance and the width over the tyres rather than the body. A machine specified as 680 mm wide may be wider at the wheels.

The test to apply

Read the sheet next to the machine and try to find a gap. If the load rating states its conditions, the hopper thickness is a number in millimetres, the battery is given in volts and amp-hours, and the motor is described rather than merely rated — the supplier is likely to be straightforward for the rest of the order too. If every figure is a best case, expect the rest of the transaction to be the same.

And the part most sheets leave out

Spare parts. Motors, controllers, batteries, wheels and brake components are wear items. Ask how long parts will be available and how they are ordered. A machine with excellent specifications and unavailable spares is a machine you will scrap in year three.
